HTML5 Client for SSH, VNC and RDP

If you run machines in a cloud or in a restriced environment where direct ssh is a security risk it could be a good way forward to use a HTML5 based solution. Guacamole is such an solution. It is a clientless remote access system. It is just required to install Tomcat to run the web application and a proxy deamon. The solution can connect to SSH (including key authentication), Windows RDP and VNC. As authentication backend they offer LDAP, Mysql and a file based solution.

I’m using Guacamole in multiple environments with an Apache in front for SSL. The tomcat is only available on localhost which improves the security. Furthermore it is possible to develop additional authentication providers. Based on that it should be possible to in corporate Guacamole in the single sign on solution which is available in most of the large companies.

VMware vSphere 5.1 announced

Yesterday VMware has announced the new VMware vSphere 5.1 with multiple cool new features.

VMware vSphere 5.1 introduces many new features and enhancements that further extend the core capabilities
of the vSphere platform. The core platform enhancements in vSphere 5.1 include the following:

• Improved security and auditing by removing reliance on a shared “root” account

• Improved SNMP monitoring with SNMPv3 authentication and SSL encryption

• Enhanced vMotion support, enabling virtual machines to be migrated between hosts and clusters that do not have shared storage

• Support for the latest Intel and AMD CPUs along with support for Microsoft Windows 8

• Bundling of VMware® vShield Endpoint™ as part of the core vSphere product
Along with the core platform improvements, vSphere 5.1 provides the following several virtual machine–related enhancements:

• Support for up to 64 vCPUs per virtual machine, doubling the number of support vCPUs from vSphere 5.0

• Enhanced CPU virtualization, enabling the passing of low-level CPU counters and other physical CPU attributes directly to the virtual machine, where they can be accessed by the guest OS

• Introduction of virtual machine compatibility, making it easier to identify and track virtual machine capabilities removes ambiguity regarding virtual machine upgrades and helps eliminate pressure to keep up with an ever increasing virtual hardware version. For VMware View environments, vSphere 5.1 puts in place the following critical enabling technologies that will be used with future releases of View:

• Enhanced hardware-accelerated graphics support with virtual GPUs (vGPUs)

• Guest OS Reclamation, providing the ability to return deallocated storage space inside the guest OS to the storage array vSphere 5.1 also provides several critical enhancements to VMware vSphere Auto Deploy:

• Improved scalability of the Auto Deploy server, with support for up to 80 concurrent (re)boots, twice the number of concurrent reboots with vSphere 5.0

• A new stateless caching mode that enables the Auto Deploy host to reboot in the event of an outage affecting the PXE infrastructure or Auto Deploy server

• A new stateful install mode that enables the Auto Deploy infrastructure to be used as a provisioning tool to deploy new vSphere hosts

Proxmox VE 1.6 released

A new version of the open source virtualization software Proxmox VE was released!

Change log:

* New 2.6.32 kernel including OpenVZ support, based on latest Debian Squeeze Kernel
* Removed KSM (OpenVZ does not support KSM)
* DRBD tools: update to drbd 8.3.7
* New KVM user-space tools (0.12.5)
* New OpenVZ user-space tools (vzctl 3.0.24)
* vzdump: use ionice to set io priority. By default, we now set “ionice -c2 -n7” to limit io (instead of using a default bwlimit)
* vzrestore: new –force option to overwrite existing data
* dab bug fix: only print a warning for packages installed directly with ‘dpkg’ (when there is no information in ‘available’ list)
* dab: only mount /proc/ if not already mounted (avoid problems with vzctl 3.0.24)

Trying Ubuntu Eucalyptus Cloud

trying Ubuntu Eucalyptus Cloud on a Virtual Machine (Cloud Controller, Walrus, Storage Controller) and a SUN Blade (Node Controller)

* Setup done
* register Node on Cloud Controller
* download a Virtual Machine image
* try to start the Virtual Machine –> no success got always the message “pending”
* got some strange Error messages on the node controller –> under investigation

further information will follow soon :-)

Setup a Ubuntu Eucalyptus Cloud

I’m going to setup a Eucalyptus cloud on my HP ML115 G5. I have installed a additional 160GB S-ATA harddisk.

Plan/Idea:
* install Ubuntu 9.10 with Eucalyptus Node Controller on ML115
* install Ubuntu 9.10 in a Virtual Machine on my laptop or MacMini including Eucalyptus (Cloud Controller, Walrus etc)
* download an install 1 virtual machine
* start the virtual machine and install a webserver in it

I think this should be enough for 1 weekend and I have some time left for my Girlfriend :-)
